Why We Created BereaveMed

The inspiration for BereaveMed started back in 2017, after two of our parents passed away and another’s was diagnosed with a terminal illness. We originally wanted to create a resource database about grief for students at our medical school. However, we soon realized that there was very little publicly available information to guide medical students through the process of loss and grief. This inspired us to expand our small, private database into a website so that we could reach out to anyone who might be dealing with journeys similar to ours.

While death and grief are very common, we believed it was important to create an outlet specifically for medical students who are facing these challenges. Medical school is already a unique and demanding training process, so when grief or loss are added to the mix, it can be incredibly overwhelming. Through trial-and-error, we have been learning to navigate through these experiences ourselves. We want to share what we’ve learned with our peers and establish a space for others to share their own experiences, so that other students don’t have to feel like they’re alone. We also feel it is important to supplement these personal stories with blog posts from experts in the fields of bereavement and mental health. We recognize that this website won’t cure students’ grief, but we do hope that BereaveMed can ease a little bit of the pressure of learning how to cope with it.

Grief is different for every person, so if something here does not resonate with you, that is okay! Your experience is unique to you, and the process can be difficult at times. Think of this as an open space that is one step closer to collaboration and solidarity in the medical field.
